First Data
About:
First Data is beyond the 800-lb. gorilla in the payments processing sector. It is basically the kinder, gentler King Kong of the industry, a Fortune 500 company with some 6 million merchant clients worldwide, both large and small including Walmart and Starbucks. You'll find their presence virtually everywhere; perhaps not on Skull Island, home of the mighty Kong; instead they are headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, and date to 1964 with TeleCheck services.
Pros:
First Data/First Data Merchant Services is committed to providing excellent customer service, secure data transactions, dedicated fraud and chargeback protection/investigation, and online reporting for managing transactions. They are proactive in helping a company be in compliance with PCI (Payment Card Industry) requirements. Rates and fees are competitive. They offer a range of Point-of-Sale terminal and other products.
Cons:
For such a vast company one would expect complaints. And they are certainly there—on Ripoff Report, Complaints Board, Pissed Consumer, and with the Better Business Bureau, even with governmental agencies. Many small business owners emphatically complained of surprise undisclosed fees, slow posting of money to their accounts, slow or runaround problem resolution and rudeness, accounts allegedly wrongfully frozen or terminated, accounts wrongfully turned over to collection and credit ratings damaged, not clearly disclosed terms and contract commitments, alleged bogus charges even after a contract termination, problems with equipment leasing, including paying many times over when the same equipment could have been purchased outright for far less from another supplier. Rates and fees are competitive, but they are not the best.
Conclusion:
This is a big company and a successful company with a fine track record of satisfied customers, both large and small. But one can only conclude from the complaints that while there are many businesses that have had no problem with First Data, there are others that have. Rates and fees are competitive, better than some, not as good as others. Quality of a merchant's customer service and company responsiveness—based on postings—can vary significantly.
