Charge.com
About:
Charge.com (full name, Charge.com Payment Solutions, Inc.) is an ISO (Independent Service Organization) based in Plantation, Florida, and has been operating since 1995. In 2005 it was acquired by Pipeline Data Processing Inc. of Alpharetta, Georgia.
Pros:
Charge.com has no application fee, no setup fee, an online application and quick approvals. It offers seasonal downtime, and provides 24/7 customer service. They are one of the larger providers and offer a free credit card terminal/printer that utilizes inkless thermal paper. Charge.com offers competitive rates and the merchant friendly interchange-plus pricing.
Cons:
Although this is a large company and one would expect complaints, the complaint Web sites are filled with tales of woe and warnings to others about their dealings with the company.
Merchants have complained of undisclosed, deceptive, or buried fees, undisclosed contract terms (3 years), $300-$450 cancellation fees (even when the service was never used), undisclosed annual fees, and $150-$185 PCI compliance fees. Merchants cited very friendly and knowledgeable sales staff before signing on. But customer service took on an entirely different tone once they were signed. Calling up to reverse questionable fees and withdrawals from their account by Charge.com, merchants had to endure long wait times and runarounds—when they even did get through to speak to someone. Merchants also complained about unusually long hold times on funds not deposited into their accounts for possible chargebacks, and harassing collection calls and damage to their credit when disputed or wrongful Charge.com charges were not paid.
The last time we looked the Better Business Bureau had many complaints lodged against Charge.com and its parent company. The Better Business Bureau gives Charge.com itself a B rating. With 176 recorded complaints in the last 36 months, the BBB gives Pipeline Data Processing an F rating (their lowest rating on a scale of A+ to F).
Conclusion:
This is a large company that has its share of satisfied customers. However, the negative reviews and warnings by merchants on the various complaint Web sites should give anyone pause. Some merchants used very earnest, sincere, and emphatic language in their condemnations of the company and the practices they felt victims of.
